The physical transformation of perlite ore into expanded perlite makes it an effective aggregate for use in horticulture growing mixes or by itself.

The primary role of perlite in soilless growing mixes is aeration when added to coir pith, composts, peat moss and other water holding aggregates. Its porous surface provides room for air and water in the mixes for healthy root growth.
